This course is designed to provide supervisor and managers with the critical skills needed to excel in their positions.  Participants will learn the essential leadership skills necessary to inspire their employees to be more productive and efficient.  A series of modules can be combined to develop the perfect training program for your organization’s supervisors.

Learning Objectives

  2. Understand tools and techniques for creating an energized workplace that promotes enthusiasm and better productivity.

  3. Learn and practice methods for better listening and communication.

  4. Understand the importance of their role as leaders in the organization.

This course is designed for supervisors, managers, and employees on a management track.

Course Outline

Level One: The Foundation

Effective Listening Skills
Participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of listening.  Through activity-based learning, participants will learn the barriers to effective listening and how to overcome them as well as have hands-on practice with interactive listening.

Practical Communication Skills
Participants will learn to encourage open communication through their own behaviors.  Participants will not only learn a model for presenting their views but also get hands-on practice in small groups.

Giving Praise
Participants will learn and understand the importance of showing support for people.  After demonstrations of the praise giving process, each participant will have the opportunity to practice these new tools and techniques.

Time and Priority Management
Participants will learn the difference between “gotta-do-its” and “it-can-waits” by using a simple but effective prioritizing technique.  Participants will also gain a better understanding of the importance of delegating and avoiding procrastination.

Successful Meeting Skills
This interactive program is designed to demonstrate why meetings are important.  Participants will understand the roles in a meeting and the tools necessary to conduct successful meetings.

Giving Feedback and Criticism
Participants will learn an approach for effectively giving feedback as well as tools for absorbing criticism.  This interactive session will provide participants with the opportunity to practice these new skills in small groups.

Level Two: Leadership Skills

Involvement Skills
Participants will learn how to encourage involvement and ownership among their employees.  They will also learn the levels of participation as well as the eight crucial involvement skills.  Practical, interactive exercises will reinforce these new skills.

Behavioral Styles
Participants will learn the different styles of behaving towards others and be able to identify each style.  They will identify the advantages and disadvantages of each style on the behavioral style continuum.  Small group exercises will provide an opportunity to observe their own style and its affect on others.

Effective Conflict Resolution
During this interactive program, participants will learn the different types of conflict as well as strategies for dealing with each.  They will work in small groups practicing the process for approaching group conflict.  Participants will also learn a model for handling one-on-one conflict.

High Involvement Leadership
This program is designed to develop the skills managers need to ensure a business-like, candid and involving environment.  Participants will learn and practice a four-phase interaction process for communicating and addressing issues with others. 

Problem Solving and Decision Making
This workshop teaches a simple but effective four-step process for dealing with difficult operational problems that managers often face.  Participants focus not only on using the right approach to problem solving, but also on seeking the expertise and views of others.  Participants will reinforce these new skills through hands-on practice and exercises.

Successfully Managing Change
Participants will understand the reasons for and importance of change in an organization.  They will also learn the three phases of change and how different people might respond differently to change.  Through exercises and cases, participants will practice using the tools and technique taught to effective deal with organizational change.

Setting Goals and Following-Up
Participants will learn tools and techniques for effectively setting realistic goals as well as a process for following-up to ensure that goals are accomplished.  Hands-on exercises will reinforce the tools and techniques taught.

Effective Presentation Skills
Participants will learn the components of an effective presentation as well as skills for delivering to small and large groups.  Participants will practice these presentation skills in small groups and receive constructive feedback.

Level Three: Team Building Skills

Orientation to Teams
This interactive workshop helps managers understand what moving to teams means to them and the organization, what the new roles and responsibilities are and teaches the new skills they will need to be successful in the transition.

Coaching and Counseling
This program teaches participants the importance of creating and maintaining intrinsic motivation.  Participants will learn to help employees understand their strengths as well as help employees identify their weaknesses and build an action plan for improvement.

How to Lead a Team
This workshop focuses on clarifying the team leader role and developing the leadership skills necessary to draw on the experience, knowledge and expertise of all team members.  Participants will learn and practice the tasks that have to be performed for the nurturing and success of any team.

Team Building Skills
This fun, interactive program focuses on the issues of interacting with one another as a team.  Exercises and group discussion will be used to reinforce the importance of this topic -- teams must communicate and interact effectively in order to be successful.

Maintaining a Positive Team Environment
Participants will learn ways to maintain a positive team environment that are centered around intrinsic motivation.  Participants will learn techniques for making employees’ jobs more interesting and increasing the sense of pride and accomplishment among employees.

Successfully Motivating Others
Participants will learn the advantages and disadvantages of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation as well as a process for directing a team that capitalizes on the motivation of others.

Program Format- 1/2 Day Modules

The Supervisory Skills Series is made up of ½ day modules that can be customized for your organization’s specific needs.  All of the modules are informative and interactive.  The participants learn the tools through videotaped role-plays, small group exercises and case studies.  The maximum class size is 20, but for optimum results 12-16 participants is ideal.
